President Muhammadu Buhari has reiterated his commitment to fighting corruption in traditional institutions in the country.The president represented by the Minister of Youth and Sports Development stated this in Wukari, Taraba state at the 40th anniversary celebration of the Aku-Uka of Wukari, Dr. Shekarau Angyu Masa Ibi, Kuvyo ii on the throne.
He urged traditional institutions to join hands with his administration in fighting corruption, adding that any traditional ruler found guilty of corruption would be relieve of his seat.
He pointed out that traditional rulers are playing significant role in promoting peace in the society. He said fight on corruption is a collective responsibility which everybody must be on guard.
He called on traditional rulers to strip corrupt officials of their traditional titles since most officials used corrupt money to buy traditional titles.
He advised them to strive at maintaining peace in their domain for the interest of development. He said prayers to him by Nigerians have given him renewed hope to govern and bring development to the country.
The president thanked the gathering for their prayers while in the United Kingdom and for his safe return home.
In his remarks, chairman of the occasion the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Sa’ad Abubakar said Nigeria is blessed with diverse ethnics and religions groups, saying there is the need to live peaceful with one another.
He pointed out that the country is facing security challenge and recession and urged Nigerians to pray to God for peace. He congratulated the paramount ruler of Jukun kingdom the Aku-Uka of Wukari for clocking 40 years on the throne, adding that the country will still gather again to celebrate his 50th anniversary God’s willing.
He said that traditional ruler are working hard to ensure peace among diverse ethnic groups; farmers and herdsmen conflict among others, adding that all the two religious books (Bible and Qur’an) preach peaceful co-existence.
In his remark, Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State said Plateau is the second home for the Jukun people after Wukari. He added that Taraba and Plateau states share same traditions and pray for unity and peace in the North-East and the country as a whole.
Earlier in his remarks, Governor Darius Dickson Ishaku, suggested the establishment of Kwararafa descendants association so as to create better friendship and sustain the existing relationship. He urged people of the kingdom to come up with activities that will bring them together as one to deliberate on issues affecting them.
He described the monarch Aku-Uka as a man of impeccable character, adding that he has contributed in no small measure to his long and successful reign thus far. He said the reign of the monarch has been characterized by three major building blocks such as peace, development and education, which he is currently a beneficiary and forging of inter-group relations.
He pointed out that during the reign of the monarch; Wukari has grown from a small former divisional headquarters to a multi-nodal town that has major agricultural commodity markets and small scale industries and businesses.
The governor said that in the 40th years on the throne, of the monarch, he has been the chancellor of universities of Ilorin, FUTO Owerri and currently that of Federal University of Dutse and that he strongly supported the promotion of Kwararafa University by donating 140 hectares of land to the university.
He pronounced that Wukari has become self proclaimed academic capital of Taraba State to house a private, federal universities and campus of the National Open University. He pointed out that the Aku-Uka has been arrow-head of building bridges across major ethics and using his deep knowledge of history and tradition to show that many people in the country share things in common.
He urged Tarabans and Nigerians to rededicate themselves to resolving current challenges by using peace building as a key component of economic and social development. He disclosed that the current economic challenges will be a thing of the past only if all agree to him in peace and harmony as people destined by God in a united prosperous Nigeria.
The governor said that people must work to promote peace and harmonious co-existence among themselves irrespective of their religious, tribal or political differences, adding that without peace, no meaningful development can be achieved.
He said government on its part is doing everything humanly possible to ensure that it sustains the relative peace being enjoyed in the state.
According to him, since assumption of office, he asked Tarabans to give him peace to give him peace and he will give them development, adding that the maintenance of peace in any society cannot be left to the government alone and urged all to join hands and work to sustain the existing peace.
He said he was delighted with the solidarity shown to him by President Mohammed Buhari and Speaker of the National Assembly during the ceremony.
He applauded the paramount ruler of Jukun Kingdom Aku-Uka of Wukari, for promoting peace in the kingdom, adding that God gives power to people and appoints traditional rulers among them.
