Barry Agbanigbi, Asaba

Fulani herdsmen on Tuesday again struck at Ossissa on Kwale/Asaba Road, killing a retired civil servant Magnus Offor and a commercial bus driver whose identity was not immediately known.

The suspected herdsmen, numbering over 15, reportedly emerged from the bush on sighting the long convoy of commercial vehicles heading to Onitsha market.

The suspects, who brandished various dangerous weapons ranging from short gun, knives to AK 47 rifles, shot sporadically at two of their victims’ vehicles, including a Hilux van, belonging to the Aniocha South Local Government and a Toyota Camry.

Though casualty figure could not be ascertained as at press time, an eye witness account said over five passengers were reportedly shot after dispossessing them of their personal effects.

One of the passengers, who broke down in tears, gave a graphic account of how the sum of N250,000 cash was robbed from him by the dare- devil herdsmen.

Mr. Rufus Efe, the victim, said he was ordered out of the vehicle on gun point and requested to lie down while his pockets were thoroughly searched and the N250,000 cash which he concealed inside his pant was rooted out after receiving several punches.

Over 20 passengers traveling to Ughelli, Warri, Bayelsa and Port Harcourt, were also held hostage by the suspected herdsmen.

Our correspondent gathered that majority of the cars that were trapped by the hoodlums at about 5p.m were going from Asaba to the aforementioned towns and neighbouring states.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Celestina Kalu, said the Command had launched a full scale investigation into the incident.

Executive Chairman, Champion Newspapers Limited,  Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, has expressed his belief that Nigeria would soon come out of its economic problems, adding that a situation where Nigeria is now will eventually transform into better opportunities in future.
Chief Iwuanyanwu barred his mind in Owerri shortly after celebrating his 74th birthday at the Cathedral Church of the Transfiguration of our Lord, CATOL.
He noted that Nigeria as a Great Nation must have challenges from different angles like other Great Nations but through careful management, prudence and war-against corruption, the future would be bright and stronger and united as a nation.

Speaking shortly after, the Imo State Chairman of the Nigeria Society of Engineers, Engr. Emeka Ugoanyanwu, said Chief Iwuanyanwu is about the oldest engineer in the country, not by age, rather by practice.

He said later in the year, plans are underway to establish the Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu Annual Lecture Series that  would attract people from all works of life to honour a fellow of the institute who has carved a niche for himself in his profession.

Wife of the Governor of Imo State, Nneoma Nkechi  Okorocha, extolled Chief Iwuanyanwu at 74 years for his contributions to the unity of the country and towards the uplifting of mankind, development of human resources,  praying God to add more years to him so as to serve humanity more.

IBRAHIM KADIRI

The Lagos State House of Assembly has approved a sum of N500billion Bonds for the State government spanning between 2016 and 2019.

Presenting a report during plenary on Tuesday, the Chairman of an adhoc committee set-up by the House on the matter, Oluyinka Ogundimu, informed the House that the Bond was necessary for the development of the State.

Ogundimu added that the payment of the Bond would be repaid through a 23 percent of the state Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

He added that all necessary plans are being made to ensure that the money is judiciously spent for the purpose meant for.

In his contribution, the Chairman of the House Committee on Budget and Economic Planning, Rotimi Olowo stated that Lagos is the future of Nigeria and that the bond would assist in the infrastructural development of the state.

Olowo said: “If the bond is geared towards development, it will open Lagos State to other parts of the world and generate more employments for the people. We have enough to take care of the Bond. By 2019, Nigeria would be out of recession and Lagos would be better for it.”

Also speaking, Gbolahan.Yishawu said Lagos has always been at the forefront of development and that the Bond is meant to increase spending and develop the State.

The request was also supported by other lawmakers including Jude Idimogu, Olanrewaju Ogunyemi, the Deputy Speaker of the House, Wasiu Sanni-Eshinlokun, among others.

The Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa, in co-ordinating a voice vote for the request, reiterated the fact that the Bond would help develop the state and ensure adequate infrastructural development of the State.

President Buhari’s report card full of indictment – Ajayi

FEMI-OLUSOLA IKUGBAYIGBE

The Executive Director, Salvage for Development Initiative (SDI), a non-governmental organization (NGO), Peter Ajayi, has berated the administration of President Muhamadu Buhari, saying it’s full of indictment.

Ajayi, who stated this in press statement made available to Journalists in Lagos, on Tuesday, said the 15 months of President Buhari in office has witnessed low development.

According to him “After over 15 months in office, Mr. Buhari’s report card as President is full of indictment: Nothing has changed for the better in the lives of our people. Poverty has increased. Unemployment is off the chart. Hunger roams about like hungry lion and continues to devour our people with no end in sight.

“The basic amenities of life – food, water, electricity, and good roads remain elusive as ever. Our people are in constant fear and worries. They are hell scared of today and tomorrow on how to make ends meet.

“They are engulfed in economic and social maladies inflicted by the native oppressors at every level of government. Our people have become zombies of poverty associated crimes. Noises of war and violence vibrate and reverberate all over the place. Our people are running from pillar to post not knowing what tomorrow holds. This is the worst of times!”

“We know President Buhari cannot fight the fight alone. All Nigerians must be mobilized to expunge evil and its perpetrators from our midst. We know we must come off the fence and start organizing and stop agonizing. Herein comes the crucial role of SDI. We believe it is time to move this reluctant nation forward.

“We believe Mr. Buhari has been given every necessary tool needed to rebuild and rebirth Nigeria. He has been given the political capital to put the lives of our people back on track. Indeed, he has been given the popular mandate to terminate poverty, unemployment, fear, insecurity, anxiety, and restore and instill hope and faith in our democracy”, Ajayi said.

He continued: “We believe we cannot continue to pretend like things are hunky-dory. We cannot continue to shield the President from criticisms. We cannot continue with the attitude of “see nothing, say nothing.”  We don’t want to behave like the proverbial ostrich with its head buried in the sand while the rest of its body is exposed to the elemental forces. It’s time for Mr. Buhari to go into his arsenal of his presidential initiatives and executive powers to do whatever it takes to jumpstart the economy. Hunger knows no patience. Our people are hungry. Our people are hurting. Our people are suffering. Our people are dejected. Our people are confused. Our people are dying – in droves. They need jobs, jobs, and jobs. They need food. They are thirsty. They need water – good water – to drink. They want to be able to provide for their children. They want the same good things of life that the looters of our treasury and their families enjoy.  These are the “change” they voted for.”

The statement said “Mr. Buhari is not communicating with the Nigerian people as he should. There is a wide communication gap between the President and the people. This is wrong. It’s not done in a democracy. We believe Mr. Buhari should go on live television to address the nation on what he’s doing on the economy, how and when he’ll create jobs. He should inform us where we are in the war of corruption. It looks like the war on corruption has ended without any victor except the thieves. He cannot keep mute and aloof. In short, he should make it his habit to update the Nigerian people periodically on where we are, and where we’re headed. Mr. Buhari cannot fold his arms while the National Assembly continues to siphon billions every month in form of outrageous salaries and criminal perks at the expense of the Nigerian people. He must do something to tighten the belts of the prodigal sons and thieves in the National Assembly. The Nigerian people have sacrificed enough. They have nothing else to give.”

The statement said that if the President fails to act speedily, it said he (Buhari) will lose the anti-corruption war

“If the President fails to act speedily, he will lose the war on corruption. Meanwhile, losing the war on corruption is as good as losing the trust and confidence reposed on him by the Nigerians. We will not forgive him if he loses the war.”

“People’s patience is dying by the day on the extremely slow pace of things in Nigeria. Anxiety and confusion have replaced hope and optimism. Issues of power and corruption are good examples that readily come to mind. Till now, no one has been convicted for corruption. Where are those who have personally confessed to the corruption charges leveled against them, where are those who have refunded part of the funds embezzled, where are those who have pleaded to settle out of court, where are those that buried millions of foreign currencies in their farm land and even in the their soak away? Those who are supposed to be serving at different prisons are still walking freely in the land. What has suddenly happened to the anti-corruption promises made by the Mr President?  What a Shame.”

“We believe Mr. Buhari’s administration is tainted with nepotism. He should address the glaring issues of favoritism in the recruitment exercises conducted by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and other federal agencies. He should address the improprieties leveled against his Chief of Staff Abba Kyari and the Army Chief of Staff, General Tukur Buratai. Leadership not rooted in justice will go down in flames. The Attorney General is very incompetent in our view. The justice department needs a reformist Attorney General to revolutionize the department and straighten things out. The President is too aloof to what goes on in the justice department and The National Assembly. The President must be involved. He must take up the gauntlet and fight the enemies of Nigeria. He must give marching orders to his Attorney General to move things faster. He must challenge the courts to stop aiding and abetting the thieves by unnecessary delays in disposing cases.”

“Time is running out for President Buhari. The patience of our people is running low. It’s been a long wait. We’re sick and tired of waiting. We’ve been waiting for ever. The “change” has been slow coming. We cannot wait any longer. The urgency of now calls for a swift and serious action on Mr. Buhari’s part”, he further said.

STAN OKENWA

The Customs Area Controller at Tincan Island Port, Comptroller Bashar Umar has continued to boost inter-agency and stakeholders’ relations at the Tincan Island Ports.

The Controller recently handed over a 40ft container of suspected expired medical devices to the NAFDAC for necessary action.

In another development, the controller hosted members of the Interstate Committee on ‘Transit Goods’ led Mrs. Ekpa on the 25th of August, 2016.

The Committee which comprised officials from the Federal Ministry of Transport, Shippers Council, Customs, Nexim Bank etc, was in the Command to brief the Controller on their statutory responsibility, which includes but not limited to articulating policies that would promote regional Transit trade.

In his address of welcome, the Controller thanked the members for their resilience and commitment despite some seeming challenges.

He, however, said the committee should also be concerned about protecting /encouraging transit goods destined for Nigeria in view of its economic potentials and assured that Tincan Island Port will support the committee in whatever way to ensure the actualization of their mandate.

The head of delegation highlighted some of the challenges currently bedeviling transit trade in the region and stated that the committee was mandated to take a critical look at the entire issues affecting transit trade in Central and West Africa with a view to ensuring that Nigeria benefits economically from it and also put measures in place to guard against diversion of transit cargo.

Explaining more on the growing relations with all stakeholders in the ports, Bashar said part of his command’s moves to deepen relations included the recent convention of Stakeholder’s meeting comprising executives of Freight Forwarders, Tincan Island Chapter.

The meeting, according to him, was aimed at identifying grey areas that could hinder the concept of Trade Facilitation and promotion of international trade, with a view to proffering solutions.  He said cordial trade facilitation could be achieved in an atmosphere of honest declaration, which will ultimately allow for a seamless flow of documentation in the system.

He added that all efforts would be made to create on enabling environment for honest declarants to thrive in their business in the spirit and letter of trade facilitation.

He noted that the Service has what it takes in terms of advanced technology to monitor transactions and ensuring Revenue Leakages are blocked.

At the stakeholders meeting, the Controller drew the attention of participants on the need to take advantage of the full automation of Customs processes and procedures for the advancement of their transactions.

While charging stakeholders to be compliant in all ramifications to avoid any impediment that could be counterproductive, he explained that the forum provided an ample opportunity for the controller to educate participants on the export potentials abounding in the country which he stated have not been fully explored.

He advised the leadership to create the awareness on their respective Associations so that emphasis will also be on ways of utilizing the export potential of the Country in order to become major players in the economic sector as well as wealth creators, thereby surviving the presents Global economic uncertainties.  Speaking further, the Controller promised to implement conduct of examinations in the terminals in two phases as a major strategy towards facilitating legitimate trade.

In a telephone interview, the Public Relations Officer, Nigeria Customs Service, Tin Can Island Port, Mr. Uche Ejesieme, confirmed that the pilot scheme for the proposal would commence with Ports and Cargo Terminal as from September 5th 2016.

FG to borrow N120bn from local debt market

The Federal Government is planning to borrow N120bn ($387m) in local-currency denominated bonds at an auction on September 14, the Debt Management Office has said.

The DMO said on Tuesday it would raise N40bn each from debt maturing in 2021, 2026 and 2036, using the Dutch auction system.

All the bonds are re-openings of previously issued debt.

The Federal Government has estimated it will borrow around N900bn from the local debt market this year to fund a budget deficit projected at N2.2tn.

The Central Bank of Nigeria has said it is planning to borrow N1.77bn via Treasury Bills in the last three months of the year.

In its fourth quarter Treasury bill issue programme released on Monday, the CBN said it would raise about N815.37bn, comprising 91 days, 182 days and 364 days debt instruments

In addition to the above, the central bank was also planning to raise about N952.05bn as rollover in the three categories of the instruments.

The nation’s overnight naira interbank lending rate eased to 16 per cent on Friday, down from 20 per cent recorded the previous Friday.

This followed improved naira cash liquidity after the disbursal of July budgetary allocations to Federal Government agencies.

The Federal Government distributes revenues from crude exports and taxes among the three tiers of government every month.

About N250bn ($751m) belonging to states and local government from July budget hit the banking system last week, and provided liquidity.

Total bank surplus cash with the CBN stood at N118bn on Friday, better than the N62bn recorded last Friday.

At the CBN’s Monetary Policy Committee meeting in July, the central bank raised its benchmark interest rate (Monetary Policy Rate) to 14 per cent in a bid to tighten liquidity.

Cardinal Onaiyekan: Current economic challenge’ll increase human trafficking

The Archbishop of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, yesterday, warned the Federal Government that the current economic challenges facing the country could lead to increase in human trafficking in Nigeria.

Onaiyekan, who stated this at the Caritas conference on human trafficking within and from Africa, in Abuja, urged the Federal Government to urgently do something to improve the economy.
The cleric told the government to do more than just convincing the youths to embrace agriculture in order to reduce the level of poverty in the country.
He said: “It (trafficking) is likely to increase the number of frustrated people who cannot make ends meet. You know by the time you finish university and you are roaming the streets for three, four, five and six years no job and you are becoming 30 or 31 years of age with no future, it is very difficult to sit down quietly.
“Maybe they (government) are telling people to look for other ways of making a living, go to farm but government will have to do a little bit more to make it possible for young people to go to farm or to do other things but to just sit down doing nothing and rotting away is a little bit frustrating. That is what I know.
“But, like I said, immigration to an unknown destination is not the real answer. People say that it can always be better up there.
‘’It is not true. It can be worse over there than what you are facing here. At least here you have no winter, you can sleep under the bridge. You cannot sleep under the bridge there. You will die of cold.”
Delivering his paper, entitled: The Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs, and Human Trafficking in Nigeria, the National Director, Caritas Nigeria, Fr. Evaristus Bassey, stated that SDGs provided a platform to address issues of trafficking in Nigeria.
Fr. Bassey called on governments to provide free education for girls up to university level, adding that a properly educated woman would not submit herself to be trafficked.
He said: “The SDGs indicators for me provide milestones for the state and other stakeholders to use and examine society and rebuild it with a purpose and seriousness that would eliminate those structures that leave some at the fringes, structures which John Paul II called structures of sins, the after effect of which Pope Francis called a throw away culture.
“As this issue of trafficking has become a global embarrassment for Nigeria, it is important to target the key populations in this respect and take measures that would stem the tide of trafficking. Care givers of children especially women should be targeted for full time housewife status benefits; an assessment should also be conducted of girls in these catchment areas who should be monitored to complete secondary education and university education, or put into financial literacy and entrepreneurship programs that would guarantee starter packs for small businesses.
“Indeed free education for girls up to university level should be adopted as a national mitigating measure. A properly educated woman would not submit herself to be trafficked. An investment in education for girls would not only promote Goal 4(education for all) but Goal 5 (gender equality) and Goal10 (reduce inequality) as well.
“Recovered assets should be ploughed into the development of infrastructure, as poor infrastructure and poor access to basic services likely contributes to the great sense of alienation which leads to human trafficking.”

NAN boss: Reports of hardship in Nigeria ‘mere propaganda’

The Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria, Bayo Onanuga, has come under fire after accusing the Nigerian media of embellishing reports about the country’s economic crisis that has left families struggling to survive.

Mr. Onanuga accused the media of “over-sensationalization”, and said reports about hardship appeared to be a “mere propaganda”, inflamed by those who lost the 2015 election.

In a Facebook post Tuesday, Mr. Onanuga said his findings showed that the cost of food items had not gone up, contrary to reports in the media.

“I was in Bauchi and Jos at the weekend, I also found that food was cheap everywhere,” said Mr. Onanuga, who appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari last May.

“In our hotel, we paid about N700 for a plate of semovita, or eba with a choice of cat fish or chicken.

“On the roadside, I found to my surprise that with just N1000, I bought over 50 oranges, two giant water melon and 10 pieces of sweet potato.

“I had experienced a similar thing in the market at Abuja, where I found that with N1, 400, I could make a big vegetable soup, with tomato, pepper and roasted Titus fish.

“Are the media and bloggers really painting a correct image of our country? It’s time for the media to objectively conduct a reality check about our reports, whether we are not over sensationalising so-called hardship that we talked about.”

Mr. Onanuga also faulted recent media reports that due to the grinding hardship, foreign airlines fly almost empty out of Nigeria.

“My daughter was on the Virgin Atlantic Flight that took off from Lagos to London today,” he said.

“I asked her to find out whether the plane was filled up or going to London near empty judging by the noisy campaign from a section of the country about the ‘hardship’ in our country.

“My daughter sent back this one-line text, after boarding: “daddy, the flight was filled up o.

“This makes me to wonder whether all the seeming orchestrated campaign in the media was not mere propaganda to make the Buhari regime look really bad.”

A respected journalist, Mr. Onanuga was among those who confronted the tyranny of military rule in Nigeria in the 1980s and 1990s. He suffered persecution during the Sani Abacha dictatorship and fled the country in December 1997.

Before his appointment as head of NAN, Mr. Onanuga, a multiple award winning publisher, editor, and reporter, was the chief executive officer of The News/PM News.

His comments Tuesday drew scathing criticisms from his online followers on Tuesday, with some readers asking him to take down the post.

One user, Adeyemi Adeniyi, described Mr. Onanuga’s comments as “plain insensitive”.

“Mr. Onanuga certainly does not belong here in the world of Nigerians who daily toil and yet groan under excruciating hardship,” he wrote.

Victor Ojelabi suggested the NAN MD’s account had been hacked. “Someone should please inform him,” Mr. Ojelabi.

Mr. Onanuga confirmed to PREMIUM TIMES that he authored the post. Again, he suggested that the claim of hardship was politically motivated.

But he said he merely posed a question, and had not taken a definite position on the issue.

“I am not saying there’s no problem in our country, but some of the things are exaggerated. I just raised a kind of intervention to ask are these things really true,” Mr. Onanuga told PREMIUM TIMES. “I have seen photographs of children suffering from kwashiorkor and they are passing them off as what’s happening in Nigeria.

Mr. Onanuga said he was not surprised by the criticisms that followed his post.

“Some people have taken position. Some people who lost election in 2015 are still behaving as if they were still campaigning. If you look at some of criticisms, they appear to be coming from a particular section of the country persistently and consistently,” he said.

DHQ: Militants hide under regional agitation to commit crimes

The Defence Headquarters has raised the alarm that new militant groups sprouting up in the Niger Delta are hiding under the cover of regional agitation to commit heinous acts in the region.

The Acting Director, Defence Information, Brig. Gen. Rabe Abubakar, said this in a statement on Tuesday.

He also advised law abiding Nigerians to ignore the order by the Niger Delta Greenland Justice Mandate to people living near oil and gas facilities to vacate the places.

Abubakar said the new militant group, NDGJM, which claimed responsibility for the blowing up of the NNPC pipeline had warned residents to vacate the area to avoid being caught in the coming attacks.

He stressed that nobody or group had the power to force residents to relocate from any part of the country for whatever reason.

Abubakar expressed regrets that some groups were still carrying out destructive acts in spite of the peace moves by the Federal Government.

He said the military would remain focused and committed to the provision of adequate security to lives and property in the country.

He said, “The Defence Headquarters wishes to alert the general public of the disturbing spate with which various militant groups are springing up in the Niger Delta with each of them hiding under regional agitation to commit all manners of crimes and atrocities.

“The latest being the Niger Delta Greenland Justice Mandate that claimed responsibility for blowing up NNPC oil pipelines few days ago. The same group has come out again, demanding residents living near oil and gas infrastructure to vacate their homes to avoid being caught in its next attacks.”

Ahmad Salkida, the Nigerian journalist taken into custody on Monday, weeks after being declared wanted by the army, has been released late Tuesday.

The sources said Mr. Salkida was released on Tuesday evening by the State Security Service, more than a day after he was arrested at the airport in Abuja.

Mr. Salkida was declared wanted on August 14 alongside two others. The two turned themselves in the second day and were subsequently granted administrative bail.

Mr. Salkida was accused of aiding Boko Haram. Authorities also raised issues about the way he was sourcing video recordings from the sect.

He, however, denied the allegations when quizzed by SSS officials.

He was released without conditions, our sources said.

All documents and devices confiscated from him were returned.

Rights groups attack FG as police halt BBOG protest over Chibok girls

A gale of condemnation, on Tuesday, followed the disruption of a protest by the Bring Back Our Girls campaigners in Abuja, who were stopped by security operatives and a group claiming to be supporters of President Muhammadu Buhari from seeing the President.

Among the human rights groups and individuals, who condemned the action of the police and the pro-Buhari supporters, were the Executive Director of the Civil Liberties Organisation, Mr. Ibuchukwu Ezike; the Executive Chairman, Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders, Mr. Debo Adeniran; the Civil Liberty Organisation; a security analyst, Ben Okezie; and the Publicity Secretary of pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Mr. Yinka Odumakin.

Ezike, while speaking with one of our correspondents on Tuesday, said the government had shown its lack of respect for the citizens and human rights by deploying the police to bar the BBOG protesters.

He said, “Even if it is one person who is protesting or demanding an explanation from the leaders or the government, such a person should be afforded the opportunity, how much more a group that has been campaigning for government to intensify effort to rescue these girls from the captivity of  Boko Haram.

“The government not listening to them shows that we have not departed from the past. And for the police to harass them, it shows that there is no respect for human rights because the citizens have the right to protest activities of the government which they find not to be in consonance with best global practices.’’

Also, Adeniran described the government’s approach to the BBOG protest as a miscalculation, saying the police were making their cause more popular by stopping them from seeing the President.

Adeniran stated, “The police are just making the cause of the BBOG group more popular because if they had allowed them to get to the Presidency, somebody would have addressed them, knowing that the President himself was not available when they got there.

‘‘It is a miscalculation on the part of the government to have barred the BBOG group from getting to the Presidency; it is unnecessary; they don’t have to stop them. They have been there for more than two years; they have not fomented any trouble. There is no reason the police should stop them.”

On his part, the President, CLO, Igho Akeregha, said Buhari was becoming tyrannical.

He said, “The continuous clampdown on the BBOG by the Federal Government is a clear sign that the Buhari administration is increasingly becoming tyrannical and repressive.

“If the administration is unable to rescue the girls and resorts to jackboot intimidation of citizens, who are flustered by endless promises of the government to free the girls, the government may as well oil its guns and be prepared for the wrath of more Nigerians who will join the clamour to pressure the government to rescue the girls in the days ahead.”

Okezie said the government had no legal or moral justification to stop the BBOG protesters, noting that the failure of Buhari to rescue the girls prompted the protest in the first place.

He said, “If his (Buhari) children are among the abducted girls, will he not take every measure to get them back? When (the former finance minister, Ngozi) Okonjo-Iweala’s mother was kidnapped, did the security agencies not search everywhere till they rescued her?”

Odumakin stated, “I said it and I am saying it again: the remnants of #BBOG# should know that the outfit was a special vehicle created as part of the regime’s change agenda.

“Now those of them who are genuine about the cause should count the cost of their continued engagement with a security apparatus that may soon bear its full fangs.”

Tempers had flared on Tuesday as the #BringBackOurGirls members engaged security operatives, who attempted to halt their protest to the Presidential Villa, Abuja, in a confrontation.

Also, a group of protesters, who claimed to be expressing support for Buhari, confronted the BBOG protesters a few metres away from the President’s office, telling the Chibok girls campaigners to stop distracting Buhari.

Armed policemen, numbering over 60, mounted a barricade on the Shehu Shagari Way, Central Business District, Abuja, to prevent the campaigners from taking their fourth protest to the seat of power.

But the group breached the police cordon thrice to reach the access road to the Presidential Villa, where they pasted the pictures of the Chibok schoolgirls on the bridge.

The protesters, including Chibok indigenes, were earlier stopped from marching to the Aso Villa by the policemen and women, who formed a barrier by the Federal High Court headquarters.

Displaying pictures of the over 200 Chibok schoolgirls, abducted by Boko Haram from the Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, on April 14, 2014, the BBOG members had a standoff with the security operatives for some minutes, pleading that they be allowed to proceed with their march.

The BBOG Co-convener, Mrs. Oby Ezekwesili, approached the leader of the police team, identified as CSP Garba, and entreated him to allow the group to continue with its march, but the senior officer simply ignored her.

Miffed by the police personnel’s lack of concern, the protesters broke through the ranks of the policewomen and marched on, while the security operatives ran after them.

The operatives caught up with the campaigners around Bayelsa Guest House and quickly formed another barricade to stop the march.

The rowdy situation also paralysed vehicular movement on the road.

Ezekwesili berated the policemen for denying the coalition members their right to protest.

“Officer, will you allow me to proceed? I am a harmless citizen,” she said and breached the blockade again with other BBOG members following her swiftly.

The group was halted at the access road to the Aso Villa, where they had held three protests earlier.

The protesters were, however, confronted by a pro-government group, which had taken over the access road to the Presidential Villa, chanting pro-President Buhari songs.

But while the Chibok girls’ campaigners were harassed by the police, the pro-government group were given tacit approval by the police to protest at the access road to the Aso Villa.

The group, donning green and white T-shirts with the inscription, #IStandWithBuhari, and carrying placards, opposed the BBOG members, whom they branded as enemies of the country.

A member of the group, Amina Mohammed, denied being paid to attack the Chibok girls campaigners, stating that they were out to drum support for the President.

“We didn’t know the BBOG members are protesting today; we just wanted to drum support for President Buhari. I wasn’t sponsored to join this protest; nobody can sponsor me; I am doing it (protest) from my heart. All I want is peace,” she said.

The leader of the pro-government protesters, Idris King, told journalists that their protest was in solidarity with Buhari on his efforts to end Boko Haram insurgency.

He pointed out that his group was made up of Nigerians from all sectors, who had decided to tell the Ezekwesili-led group to allow the Federal Government work on the rescue of the girls.

King stated, “We are referring to whoever has been disturbing the government. Any responsible government knows that the issue of national security will not be disclosed to the general public. The reason is simple: it will make the government porous to the people. “When this government came in, in their own wisdom, they used their strategy. They never told us how they were going to stop the series of bombings.”

Ezekwesili told journalists that her group was not interested in meeting the President, noting that they had met him twice without any positive result or coherent decision from him.

The former education minister added, “We have not been coming out because we want to sit with Mr. President. No. We sat with Mr. President twice; he didn’t make any difference. We want to make sure that as citizens, we will continue to give the President no rest until he does what he pledged.

“He pledged that he would not consider himself to have defeated Boko Haram without the rescue of our Chibok girls and all other abducted citizens of this land.

“We don’t want a meeting; we want the President to know that we will continue to demand the rescue of our Chibok girls.”

Reacting to the attempt by the police to halt the protest, Ezekwesili argued that the campaigners had constitutional rights to the freedom of movement and association, which she noted, could not be taken away.

She said the government must take a decision in respect of the schoolgirls in the Boko Haram captivity, stressing that the issue should not be treated as an open-ended affair.

Ezekwesili said, “There are three options that the President and the Commander-in-Chief with his team of security people can take from. The President can decide a military action to rescue our Chibok girls or the President can decide to negotiate for the release of our Chibok girls or the third option, the President can combine the military operation with negotiation.

“Now, there is a fourth option. Unfortunately, it’s the riskiest of all the options. The first three options are risky. We are mindful of the fact that there are risks attending the three options but the fourth option is the riskiest of them all. It is the option of ‘do nothing’. They treat the captivity of our Chibok girls as an open-ended affair.”

Parties’ antecedents ‘ll determine fate of candidates
In this analysis, correspondent EBOJELE AKHERE PATRICK reports that stakes are very high in the Saturday’s governorship election in Edo state as two dominant issues will determine which of the 19 political parties contesting the poll will get the electorates votes just as Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC is not leaving anything to chance to conduct free and fair exercise. He also insists that it is a straight battle between the All Progressives Congress, APC candidate, Mr. Godwin Obaseki and his counterpart in the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

The die is cast and in less than 48 hours from now, eligible voters in Edo state will converge on their designated polling units to cast their votes for their preferred governorship candidate. And that would have put to an end months of electioneering campaigns by the about 19 political parties that have fielded candidates for the elections
Though from the intensity of campaigns and commitment to seek the support of the voters as well as the character of the personalities involved, it is evidently clear that either of the two major political parties, the APC and PDP will carry the day considering their followership ahead of the electoral contest. This is not to say however that other parties are not in reckoning but it is interesting to note that the two parties have had a date with history with Edo people.
Firstly, the opposition’s PDP whose candidate, Pastor Ize-Iyamu which ruled the state for about 10 years before 2008 and the incumbent APC whose flag bearer is Mr. Godwin Obaseki and has been in government for almost eight years.
Political analysts however are quick to point out that, it even makes it less cumbersome for the Edo voters to make a choice since both of them have been in power before and comparing which party has done well while it had the opportunity to serve performed well or poorly.
Again, going into Saturdays poll, the electorates also have at the back of their minds the calibre of personality wishing to lead them as history at one time or the other has provided them also as individuals the opportunity to serve. So, these are some of the major reasons the contest will majorly be a two- horse race between Obaseki, an investment banker and Chairman Edo State Economic Team and Pastor Ize-Iyamu ,experienced politician and former Secretary to the Edo State Government.
It is also argued that the basis for comparisons as it relates to which of the political parties that has fared well in terms of the provisions of basic social infrastructural development to the people has been made very easy. But in the present circumstances the prevailing economic recession in the country has eaten so deep in the minds of the people so much that they seems to be forgetting that the present government in the state has done well and this is the crux of the matter.
Therefore, it has been opined by political watchers in the state that come Saturday, voters will base their decision on which party has the greatest capacity to deliver on its electioneering promises. But this is not so much that the leadership of the contesting political parties are not living any stone unturned.
It was observed that within the period of campaigns, the party’s conducted themselves in an orderly manner except for a few incidences that occurred during the tours. Never has campaign been this intense and to an extent issues based in the history of electioneering in Edo State like this very one.
Reasons being that the level of political awareness even in the remotest villages in the state has risen above bar, courtesy of the Comrade Adams Oshiomhole- led APC government which had as its slogan ‘Let the people lead’. As a party and as candidates, issues bordering on the development of the state were highlighted and canvassed so deeply by these individuals.
One last- minute campaign issue raised by Pastor Ize-Iyamu, is that if Governor Oshiomhole had heeded the advice given him by road construction engineers, the flood now ravaging many party of Ugbowo axis of the Benin-Ore expressway would have been averted.
He faulted the construction of the two service lanes added to the road by the Oshiomhole administration pointing out that the governor added the service lane to the road in order to deceive the people of the state that it was his government that reconstructed parts of the expressway within the Benin metropolis.
The PDP candidate, who stated this during a PDP rally held at Adolo Road in Egor Local Government Area of the state, said it was regrettable that a road such as the Adolo College Road could be left untouched by the Oshiomhole’s government, assuring that he would prioritize the road if elected into office on Saturday.
“At a time the Federal Government was reconstructing the Ugbowo Road, Oshiomhole was campaigning for his second term election. He saw that it could affect his re-election, so he quickly went to the same contractor working on the road and ask them to help him put a lane by the sides of the road.
“He was advised to do the adjoining roads instead of adding a lane by the sides of the road. He, however, declined the advice given him because he wanted to create the impression that he was the one doing the Ugbowo Road.
“He was inspecting the road everyday to create this impression. The money spent on the side lanes he constructed could have done the adjoining roads such as Adolo Road. The so called extra lanes were unnecessary, the design was bad and the consequence is the flooding in the adjoining streets.”
The PDP candidate, who was joined by the Edo State chairman of the PDP at the campaign rally, asked the people of the area to punish the APC and Governor Oshiomhole during the election, pointing out that “they have leveled huge taxes upon you and asking you to vote for continuity.”
In what seems to sum up the campaigns, the party at a stakeholders meeting drummed up support for its candidate just as Pastor Ize-Iyamu declared that he was contesting Saturday’s election basically to win and be sworn into office as the next Edo state governor.
Ize-Iyamu who was addressing an impromptu stakeholders of the party drawn from all the 18 local government areas of the state held in Benin City, appreciated the party leadership at both the national, state, local government and ward levels for their solidarity by their prompt response to the sudden invitation to the stakeholders’ meeting.
He said he is confident of victory for the PDP as the party which boasts of great leaders like the Esama of Benin, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, Chief Tony Anenih , Chief Tom Ikimi  and Chief Mike Oghiadomhe cannot afford otherwise on Saturday.
“Many of you know the very vicious fight instigated by external forces – some from our state- that we have been facing at the national level. A lot of the fight we could not fight because it was in Abuja. But thank God we had a very dogged national chairman who was also able to block all the antics of those who wanted to frustrate us”.
Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State who also spoke at the event assured voters in the state that Pastor Ize-Iyamu will emerge as the next Edo governor on Saturday, and said that the battle will not be an easy one.
He however asked all party members and leaders to be united, committed and resolved in seeking the victory, arguing that, “PDP is on ground in Edo therefore, do not be intimidated. We have come to give you the moral support so that you will emerge victorious but you must be united and work as a team because this is your last opportunity”.
Describing the election as the battle to liberate Edo he said, “Freedom is not easy to get. When you want to get freedom, you must make sacrifice. The poll in Edo means making sacrifice and require commitment …you will be intimidated therefore prepare yourself”. He also told the stakeholders to be wise in their relationship with security operatives, assuring them that they should ensure that the right thing is going on at every polling unit so that the true results will come out.
Wike added that party agents at all polling units must be alert and attentive at all times and refrain from making excuses that will see the other party manipulating the process and try to get the victory. Also speaking, the Delta state governor Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwu Okowa said that for too long Edo which is a twin brother of Delta has been in pains for the last eight years adding that it is important that PDP leaders and stakeholders at all levels should join hands to redress with victory at Saturday’s election.
He added that Edo people will need to turn out en masse on Saturday to elect a PDP governor in Pastor Ize-Iyamu because in the South-South geopolitical zone it has been left out of the family and needs to urgently come back to the fold.
“Edo and Delta are brothers and we are waiting patiently to ensure that we control the two states and those of us in the South-South, we are waiting patiently because we want to have a unified family”.
Okowa said,” I have seen it in you, but this boldness that I see must translate to victory on Saturday. We can win all the local government areas of this state. And we must ensure that we are right on ground to defend our votes”, adding that, “In the Bible in Joshua chapter one, God know it would be difficult but he told Joshua to be strong and courageous- that is my charge to you”.
“I believe you all know that in the last eight years it has been pains in Edo and if you want the pains to stop, you must fight not just for yourself but also for the people and that fight you must mobilize the people to vote, defend the votes and defend the results at the unit level, to the ward and local and even the state level, ” he said.
At the same event the deputy governor of Bayelsa State, Rear Admiral John Jonah said that the APC which are the present holders of power in Edo will do all they can to remain in power but the PDP supporters across the state must show them the way out on Saturday.
He said, “the APC has a strategic document called the south-south and North central penetration document. And for the South-South, they clearly stated that when election comes, get all the results and let the PDP go to court and we will appoint the judge”.
Jonah who apologized for the absence of Governor Seriake Dickson said that party agents must be proactive and use their mobile devices where necessary to record developments at the polling units adding that such incidents often stopped malpractices at elections. “From what I am seeing and I listened to the debate of the four candidates and am very proud to say that we have a very capable candidate representing us. It is our greatest asset and we must build on it”.
He reiterated Governor Okowa’s plea on the need for party agents to follow the votes after it has been counted in order to ensure that electoral officials do not collude with others at the venue to deprive the party of victory. He said outgoing Edo governor Oshiomhole’s penchant for insulting leaders and elders was un-African and a sacrilege which as a person he should be afraid of.
On his part the National Chairman of the PDP Caretaker Committee Senator Ahmed Makarfi who called for a minute silence over what he called the demise of APC in Edo state, warned against any attempt to frustrate the will of Edo people by disrupting weekend’s governorship election. He said a service of songs would be due for the APC  after the elections even as he predicted the fall of the APC in Edo and the emergence of a the PDP candidate, Pastor Ize-Iyamu as the next Edo state governor  in the election because he is a better candidate.
The chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees Senator Walid Jibrin said he was at the meeting with a message of goodwill to Edo people that on Sunday they will a have a brand new PDP governor. He also prayed that God will punish anyone or group that will take it upon itself to disrupt the polls in any guide or manner that will affect the will of Edo people.
But going into the polls with so much enthusiasm and focus to continue in the developmental strides of the outgoing governor, is Obaseki’s greatest asset and has promised to make Edo the next economy hub of Nigeria, after Lagos, when elected as governor of Edo on September 10. Obaseki made this promise during an interactive session in a programme titled, “International Leadership Idea Exchange” organised by management of the Benson Idahosa University (BIU), in Benin recently.
This is coming as he disclosed that 150,000 hectares of land have been allocated for agricultural purposes in Edo. The candidate, who said the foundation for this had already been laid by the outgoing government, but now only needed a quality leadership to actualise this stressing that the state already possesses the potential of being the economy hub with its advantageous position, agricultural activities, and the population.
He said that aside the quality leadership his government will offer, his administration will invest in agriculture and quality and affordable education, that will produce more of the human resources needed to drive the process. Obaseki who blamed the past Federal Government-led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), for the present economy hardship, promised to enthrone a transparent, accountable and a responsible government, when elected as Edo governor.
“At the federal level, under the PDP, we were less than responsible. The country made lot of money from sales of crude oil, but rather than saving, they squandered everything, including all the savings they met. Now the price of crude has crashed, there is much pressure on the naira as we have become a consuming nation who imports practically over 70 per cent of her needs, the economy is now in recession. But in Edo, we see the crash in the price of crude oil as a better opportunity for us. We now have to maximise our God given potential in agriculture, population, and the location of the state, to be a production state rather than just a consuming one.
“The foundation for this has been laid with the massive investment in infrastructure this past seven and half years, all that is needed is continuity, especially with the person who has the quality and has been part of the rebuilding process. We have learnt our lesson, we have huge opportunity, but we need to be discipline,” stated Obaseki.
While reiterating that his promise of creating a minimum of 200,000 jobs, he stressed that government alone cannot create all the needed jobs but can achieve this through its policies. The APC flag bearer, who fielded questions from the management and staff of the institution, also promised massive investment in quality and affordable education in Edo.
Also, an elated Governor Oshiomhole, would not let Ize-Iyamu criticisms go without a quick reply saying that, Pastor Ize-Iyamu is jealous of his numerous achievements in eight years, something the PDP government failed to do in 10 years.
In a response to Ize-Iyamu’s allegation that the Oshiomhole government caused the flooding on Ugbowo road in Benin City, Oshiomhole, through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Peter Okhiria, said “we note that Mr. Ize-Iyamu is still living in the past; a past filled with emptiness and incompetence which was displayed by the Government of Mr. Lucky Igbinedion in which Ize-Iyamu served as Chief of Staff and Secretary to Government.
“It is laughable that Ize-Iyamu has come out to make such a wild allegation of flooding on Ugbowo Road, the same road on which many people were washed away by flood during their eight years of crass incompetence and cluelessness. A road which was a nightmare to motorists during their time in government as it was characterised by perennial flooding when that government could not even de silt the drains on the road.
“Ize-Iyamu’s outburst can only come from a man consumed by envy over the numerous achievements of the Comrade Governor on roads construction, de flooding of the state capital through the Benin Storm-water Master plan; construction and reconstruction of red-roof schools; construction of a brand new 5-Star Central Hospital; construction of brand new General Hospitals in Otuo and Ewohinmi; reconstruction of other General hospitals across the state; construction of a world-class university, payment of a new N25,000 Minimum wage to workers in the state public service, the only state to do so in the country; facilitation of multi-billion dollar investments into the state, among other numerous achievements.
“The people of Edo State have not forgotten how the failed Government in which Ize-Iyamu served as SSG created the Tom Line River and how perennial flooding at the 5-Junction area of the state capital continued unabated during their time, due to the low quality of governance they provided.
“The people have not forgotten how the Lucky Igbinedion government, with Ize-Iyamu as Secretary to Government, the engine room of government, the man who approved all government memos, merely heaped concrete on a section of the Ugbowo road, in a crude and clueless manner, and rather than solve the flooding problem on the road, they compounded the woes of motorists.
“However, the people of the state and motorists plying the road know how the intervention of the Comrade Adams Oshiomhole government has completely put an end to the misery of motorists on that road through a comprehensive approach of the Storm Water Master plan and how the construction of deep underground drains at the 5-Junction has completely de flooded the Ugbowo Road and the 5-Junction area-.
“We find it amusing that a man aspiring to the highest political office in the state cannot see beyond his nose and faults the expansion of the Ugbowo Road to three lanes on each side. This only shows the poor quality of his thinking and his sinister plan to return Edo State to the dark days. We are aware that Ize-Iyamu’s ambition is to continue in the footsteps of his master and play the evil script written for him by those who ran the state aground during their inglorious years in government.”
But at a grand finale held at the Samuel Ogbemudia on Tuesday, President Muhammadu Buhari who was personally on ground to endorse Obaseki and and his running mate Hon. Philip Shaibu  said, “I congratulate Mr. Obaseki a seasoned person, I assure you and I recommend him to you so that you will continue to grow.
Among those present at the grand finale rally were the governors of Sokoto, Kogi, Kebbi, Niger, Kaduna, Plateau, Benue, Ogun, Kano, Kastina states, Ministers of State Petroleum, Dr Ibe Kachukwu, Minister of State Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, national chairman of the APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, past and serving Senators, House of Representatives members, Party leaders, members of the National Working Committee, and others.
In his welcome address, Mr. Anslem Ojezua, the state APC chairman said the campaign train of the party has been widely shown love and care in all the communities visited as a result of the giant strides of Governor Oshiomhole who has showed the people what change is all about.
He added that the change the country is currently undergoing was started in the state years ago when Oshiomhole took over government from the PDP in the state adding that the state will never return to the PDP as the party is fully ready to ensure victory at the poll.
He thanked the President for visiting the state saying it is a boost for the party and the supporters. Also, the chairman of the National Campaign Council, Governor Akinwumi Ambode joined other supporters to welcome President Buhari to the state urging people to vote for Obaseki has he has been tested and trusted.
He said the presence of the president “is a pointer to the level of importance we attached to the political economy of the people of Edo state. Edo state is the heart beat of the South-South Region if not Nigeria. Presently Edo state without any controversy has witnessed the best developmental projects in the last seven and half years more than any other period in the last 17 years. It is also true that Governor Oshiomhole has laid the right foundation for governance, he has been responsive, progressive and totally committed to the needs of the people. And so through our actions and campaigns we are convinced that the only way forward is to vote for continuity of the successes.
“It is very clear that the continuity of the APC government is the sure way to greater progress. We are all witnessed to the progress in Lagos, we have been voting for continuity in Lagos since 1999, Edo can be another Lagos; the state has all the potentials to be great in the fact of governance and economic greatness. You all need Godwin Obaseki now. He will bring his financial expertise to turn the state around for better.
“Edo state can’t and should not throw away this key success secret. You must vote APC. I know Obaseki, he is people friendly, he is reliable, trust worthy and above all he has the fear of God and I vouch for him, all the members of the campaign council vouch for him that he is the only sure way to progress in Edo state”, he stated.
The host governor, Oshiomhole, who criticized Pastor Ize-Iyamu for talking about projects that were rendered ‘koboless’ by the government he served as Secretary also lamented, “Between 1999 and 2008 a period of ten years, these people together with their godfathers, can you remember anything in any of your ward that you can say they did for you?
He said, “Under PDP they introduce discriminatory school fees, but we abolished it because our party as a progressive party that believes in one Nigeria. There was never investment in roads, water, and education even as he urged the electorate to come out en masse on the day of election and vote for the APC as a way of punishing the PDP for their sins against the people and the state.
“On Saturday remember it is not over until it is over, tell your people to go and vote and punish the PDP”, he added. While introducing Mr. Obaseki and his running mate, Hon. Shaibu, Chief Odigie-Oyegun, also a former governor of the state, urged the people to appreciate the development of Governor Oshiomhole in the last eight years by voting his party.
He juxtaposed the 10 years of the PDP administration to that of the APC stressing that all voters should take hold of the election to ensure that the development in the state is sustained and continued. On his part, the APC candidate, Obaseki who noted that the victory of President Buhari in the 2015 general election has prompted him to run for governor to continue and improve the pace of development in the state.
He assured the people that his vision for the Edo is genuine and his promises to the people will be fulfilled just as he said that plans to create 200, 000 jobs have been finalized. However ahead of Saturday’s governorship poll, the INEC has declared its readiness to conduct the exercise but asked stakeholders to be of good conduct.
Professor Mohammad Kuna, special adviser to the Commission’s Chairman, stated this at a stakeholders meeting on public presentation of the security threat assessment for the Governorship election in Edo state, organized by CLEEN foundation in Benin City.
He added that the commission has been well equipped in terms of human and capital resources to carry out the exercise adding that all stakeholders must be up and doing to ensure a violent-free poll.
“It is however important that the people must own the process of electoral system. It has been observed that whatever the modalities INEC has put non ground to conduct a credible poll, the people must ensure that they behave in a civil manner to help democracy grow in the country.” he said.
Also, Professor Mim Abutudu of the University of Benin, in his presentation stated that rigging and fear of electoral manipulation can be a high risk factor that could raise the level of violence and urged INEC to ensure that materials are deployed on time to the various polling units.
But as the d-day is here, only about 1.4 million voters’ card in Edo state and this number will determine the fate of the about 5 million population in the state.
Expectedly the campaigns have not been devoid of calumny and foul language by the gladiators of the major parties. For instance, at the APC campaign rally on Tuesday Governor Oshiomhole alleged that Ize-Iyamu was rusticated from the University of Benin, UNIBEN for pouring dangerous substance into the private part of another person who is today paralysed but did not name the victim even as he claimed that Professor Itse Sagay , a Presidential Adviser in the Buhari cabinet was chairman of the panel that indicted Ize-Iyamu at that time.
Oshiomhole, who said the PDP candidate does not have the right character to occupy any responsible office stunned the huge crowd when he accused Ize-Iyamu of being a serial offender of the law.
Meanwhile, Mr. Obaseki has been dragged before the Federal High Court in Benin City for alleged certificate forgery and perjury.
The suit against Obaseki was filed in the early hours of Tuesday by the PDP. The PDP claimed that Obaseki lied on oath when he claimed to have a certificate that he never acquired in his life.
Edo State Chairman of PDP, Chief Dan Orbih, had earlier asked the PDP governorship candidate to publicly display to Edo people the original copies of his educational certificates which he said he was expecting from the US city of New York. This is contained in a statement signed by the state publicity secretary of the PDP, Mr. Chris Nehikhare. Orbih said Obaseki could go on air and use any of the many television stations in the state to publicly display the certificates or do so during his campaigns for the world to see that he actually went to school as he claims.
However, the security agencies are not leaving stone unturned in providing adequate security as the acting Inspector-General of Police has deployed additional 25000 policemen to complement existing personnel on ground to maintain law and order even as Edo people and Nigerians in general expect free, fair and credible election on Saturday.

The Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services, DSS on Wednesday asked the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC to shift the Edo State governorship election scheduled for next Saturday, 10 September.

In a joint statement signed by spokesperson for the Nigerian Police Force, Mr. Don Awunah and one Garba Abdullahi for the DSS, the two security agencies said the call for shift in the date of the election was necessitated by intelligence reports indicating a plan by  “insurgent/extremist elements to attack vulnerable communities and soft targets with high population during the forthcoming Sallah celebrations between 12th and 13th September, 2016.”
The two agencies added that “Edo State, is amongst the States being earmarked for these planned attacks by the extremist elements.”
Recalling that they had issued similar warning during celebrations in the past, the two agencies however did not indicate that the terrorists specifically planned to disrupt the election which will hold two days before the Sallah celebrations.
“ It is in regard of these that we are appealing to INEC which has the legal duty to regulate elections in the country  to consider the need for possible postponement of the date of the election in Edo State in order to enable security agencies deal decisively with the envisaged terrorist threats,” the two security agencies said.
Read the full statement below:
“The Nigeria Police and Department of State Services, wish to inform the general public that credible intelligence availed the agencies indicate plans by insurgent/extremist elements to attack vulnerable communities and soft targets with high population during the forthcoming Sallah celebrations between 12th and 13th September, 2016. Edo State, is amongst the States being earmarked for these planned attacks by the extremist elements.
“The public would recall that similar threats were issued during the May Labour Day and Democracy Day celebrations as well as the Ed-el-fitr holidays in July, 2016. However, the security agencies were able to decisively disrupt and thwart the insurgents’ plan. In the same vein, while election is important, the security agencies cannot allow the peace of the country to be disrupted, and we will continue to remain vigilant and ensure consolidation of the successes gained in the current counter-insurgency fight.
“ It is in regard of these that we are appealing to INEC which has the legal duty to regulate elections in the country  to consider the need for possible postponement of the date of the election in Edo State in order to enable security agencies deal decisively with the envisaged terrorist threats.
“While the Police/DSS remain mindful of the inconveniences this request may cause the various political stakeholders, it is our strong resolve that security agencies need not be distracted from ensuring a peaceful and secured Nigeria now and always
“Members of the public are hereby assured that the security agencies will continue to remain focused and committed and are being enjoined to remain vigilant. The attention of the security agencies should be drawn to any observed unusual movements or actions by groups or individuals in their neighborhoods.”

According to Archbishop Daniel who spoke on behalf of the group, the penetcostal bishops also advised the federal government not to be afarid to look outside its fold for
economic experts with the requisite ability to profer solutions to the ailing economy.

He said: “And also let the government know ‎that, yes, we have agreed we are in recession, the people down there whom we led are suffering, there are cries all over the place and let the government know that whatever they can do to alleviate the sufferings.

“We thank God that the President promised he will look at the hunger Nigerians are going through ‎and we do believe that because the President is a man of integrity, he will follow up with his words to ensure that the sufferings of Nigerian masses is reduced and make sure that there is enough in the country if we have all the infrastructure
working, things working.

“Agreed, we are suffering from the effect of past misrule of past leadership. All the same we believe Nigeria is a great nation, and we can foster together with our genuineness, our commitment and our intellectual intelligence to move this nation forward.
“And they should not be afraid to look for economic experts, they should not stop to get who can help in our economic recovery to ensure everything goes on well so that this country can bounce back as a great nation that we have always been, to ensure this country becomes that great nation we have always dream and talked about.”

“Also talking to him on the need for the nation to work together in unity, to move on in peace. And the disturbing factor of the Fulani Herdsmen to ensure that everything is done and to give our own advise on how the government will go on well and foster unity, peace and progress.

“We are a united nation and nobody should be thinking individually but collectively of making Nigeria great,” he noted

Manchester City defender, John Stones says he’s up for his clash with Manchester United striker, Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
After keeping the Swedish striker quiet when he played for Everton in a 0-0 draw against United in Wayne Rooney’s testimonial in early August, Stones is confident of doing the same, especially with the advice he will receive from master tactician Pep Guardiola.
He said: “Everton played United before I came to City in a charity match for Wayne Rooney and I was up against Ibrahimovic, so I’ve had experience of playing against him before.
“And hopefully I can figure out what he’s going to do if he plays or, if I play, which I hopefully will do. It will be an exciting game with a lot of big stars on the pitch, and I’m sure it’ll be a great watch for the fans who are going over to the game.”
Leicester picked up their first win of the campaign last time out when edging past Swansea City 2-1 in the East Midlands.

Manchester United goalkeeper, David de Gea has added applause to the new signing, Eric Bailly’s impressive start to his Premier League career.
In retrospect of the club’s thunderous start to the season, De Gea feels that the Ivory Coast defender has hugely impacted the team’s results.
Surprised by the defender settling so early in contrast to his own early days at the club, De Gea further divulged and complimented his team-mate for the traits that have seen Bailly win three Man of the Match awards out of the four games played so far.
Eric Bailly was new manager Jose Mourinho’s first signing for Manchester United after the club paid Villarreal a reported £30 million.
Bailly arrived with limited experience having made just 40 combined La Liga appearances for Espanyol and Villarreal, drawing concerns and skepticism.
However, De Gea admits his performances have stunned everyone at the club.
“Bailly has been a great signing. He come in and surprised us all very quickly. I remember when I first came to England and, trust me, it can be hard early on but he’s flying.”

Kane ’ll end goal drought against Stoke

Mauricio Pochettino believes Harry Kane is better-placed to handle his barren scoring run this season than he was last.
Just as he did in 2015-16, Kane has made a slow start to the campaign, failing to score in each of Tottenham’s opening three matches after a poor Euro 2016 with England.
Kane struggled in the opening two months of last season, only to find form thereafter and finish the campaign as the Premier League’s leading marksman.
Kane will seek to break his duck at Stoke on Saturday and Pochettino said: “He needs to be calm. It is difficult after the Euros and then the expectation on him is massive.
“Every time he touches the ball, we wait for him to score, and it is difficult when you need to be fit, to give your best. It is about patience, time, hard work from him and I am sure he will start to score again. He is starting to be much better.
“It was the same at the end of 2014-15. He went away with England Under-21s and the expectation was to win the European Championships. But he didn’t score in three games and it was a big disappointment for him.
“Now it is the same situation but he is more mature and more experienced. It is a different period in his life and there is no doubt he will start to score again.”

Liverpool finally play their first home game of the season this weekend against the Premier League champions Leicester City as the redeveloped Anfield opens its doors.
It’s an exciting time for the club as Jurgen Klopp embarks on his first full season and Reds fans will be hoping Saturday is the start of a new era where the team can compete both on the pitch and off of it financially.
Klopp knows exactly what the Anfield crowd can do for his team. Last year on the run to the Europa League final, a number of memorable games were played under the lights at the famous old ground and the atmosphere generated by the supporters was a huge factor behind that.
